More Area Information
Sunny Lake
Sunny Lake is about 3 miles east of Gravenhurst and accessed by exiting on to the Doe Lake Road from Hwy #11. Follow Doe Lake Road to Tomingas Road, a paved year round road, which leads you to the lake. On one side of the lake are cottages The opposite side is completely undeveloped and provides a sense of wilderness. Boat to the south end of the lake and you will not see any cottages because it is all Crown Land. Sunny Lake is one of many ‘finger’ lakes in the area, gouged from the Grey Granite Rock by the glacier millions of years ago. On a map you can almost follow the glaciers path as it continued to cut pathways thru Three Mile Lake, and down Deep Bay on Kahshe Lake. Sunny Creek joins Sunny Lake and Three Mile Lake and the water falls about 25 feet through broken rock and a beaver dam from Three Mile Lake into Kahshe Lake.
A quiet lake, Sunny is ideal for the canoe and paddle boat and with a portage you can follow the glaciers path. There are a few year round homes on Sunny Lake but 80% are still cottages split between summer only and those that have been winterized. The proximity to Gravenhurst and the quiet pristine nature of the lake make it a popular choice for lakefront owners. The water is about 45 feet deep, particularly on the East side and most of the bays are closer to 20 in depth.
Your catch of the day will likely be a smallmouth bass but like many lakes the Northern Pike has also taken hold and feeds on the numerous ‘pan’ fish including sunfish, brown catfish and a variety of minnows. Surprisingly, Muskie are not reported by the Ministry of Natural Resources even though they were put into Three Mile Lake by two locals in the 1950′s. The Muskoka Granite shoreline is interspersed with White Pine, Birch, Oak and Maple trees. The trees seem stunted because most of the soil was stripped away by the glacier. There is a public launch site for boats. Cottages on Sunny Lake sell for up to $400,000.00.
Taking a Stroll in Downtown Gravenhurst
The Sunny Lake property is located about 5 minutes from the Town of Gravenhurst (pop. 11,640, grows in the summer) to south on Hwy 6. Gravenhurst is a small and quaint town with a cottage country charm. But it also offers a wide assortment of retail, services and entertainment.
